IVAR
Research Institute for Volcanology and Risks Assessment
The geodynamic framework of the Azores, dominated by the play of the American, Eurasian and African lithospheric plates, and the Atlantic situation of the archipelago, so often responsible for recording adverse weather conditions, make this Portuguese region an extraordinary Natural Laboratory for the development and promotion of Earth and Space Sciences.
It is in this context that the Institute for Research in Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR) of the University of the Azores is inserted, a multidisciplinary research unit whose activities revolve around the prevention and forecasting of disasters, catastrophes and natural calamities, focusing on technical and scientific cooperation, national and international, in the field of Volcanology and associated phenomena, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, steam explosions, gaseous emanations, atmospheric pollution and contamination of aquifers, landslides, floods, floods and tsunamis, among others .
