CIVISA

Centre for Information and Seismovolcanic Surveillance of the Azores

The Azores Seismovolccanic Surveillance and Information Center (CIVISA) was created by the Regional Government of the Azores and the University of the Azores on July 30, 2008 with the main objective of guaranteeing the design, development, implementation and management of a multiparametric monitoring system , based on knowledge and scientific and technological criteria. This initiative was based on “the need to guarantee the operation of an integrated service for the permanent monitoring and information of geological dangers that put the safety of the populations and the social and economic stability of the Region at risk”. In practical terms, the operation of CIVISA has been guaranteed by its own technical and scientific advisory structure, which benefits from close collaboration between the Institute for Research in Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR), of the University of the Azores, and the Regional Office of Civil Protection and Firefighters of the Azores (SRPCBA).
